US demand to rise 4.1% annually through 2019

Demand for countertops in the US is forecast to increase 4.1 percent per year to 800 million square feet in 2019, valued at $29 billion. Growth will be propelled by a rebound in new building construction as well as repair and improvement of existing structures. Through 2019, the residential market will provide the most growth for countertop demand, projected to account for 80 percent of additional demand. Gains in housing completions will spur demand in the new housing seg-ment, while interest in home improvement will support replacement and remodeling demand. The ongoing con-sumer preference for spacious kitchens and multiple bathrooms that require more countertop area will further promote growth for countertops in the residential remodeling market.

Going forward, gains in residential countertop demand will accelerate from those posted during the 2004-2014 period. This period was marked by a downturn and subsequent slow recovery in new housing construction. Sluggish home sales, relatively high unemployment rates, and tougher financing standards imposed by banks over much of this period also restricted remodeling activity, particularly kitchen and bath remodels that typically entail the replacement of countertops and vanities.

In the smaller nonresidential market, approximately 70 percent of demand is from the institutional, office and commercial buildings, as these structures tend to be countertop intensive with kitchens and multiple bathrooms that feature relatively large countertop spaces. As such, a rebound in office and commercial and institutional construction segments will boost demand for countertops in the nonresidential market through 2019.

Stone, cast polymer, niche materials to grow fastest

Natural stone, engineered stone, cast polymers, and niche materials are forecast to achieve above-average gains through 2019. A drop in the average price for granite (partially due to an increase in low-cost imports) over the past decade has made this material available to a larger portion of the mass market. A moderate pricing structure and con-sumer's preference for stone appearance will promote granite demand as home remodeling and new home construction ramps up through 2019. However, while the continued mainstreaming of granite bodes well for overall granite countertop sales, it also suggests high-end homes, as well as businesses, are in the process of moving on to surfaces that are distinctive because of their perceived prestige. As such, engineered stone, natural stone other than granite, high-end tile, stainless steel and other metals, concrete, and re-cycled materials will benefit as affluent homeowners and business owners seek novel, higher-value materials to distinguish their countertops from the mass market. Cast polymers will benefit from their significant use in bathrooms, and the continued trend of multiple bathrooms in homes.

Laminates are the largest product cate-gory, although their share of the countertop market continues to slide, from 55 percent in 2004 to 48 percent in 2014, due to intense competitive pressure from alternative surfacing materials. Nevertheless, laminates will maintain a significant share of the countertop market based on their favorable cost-performance characteristics.
