Abstract

US demand to surpass $6.5 billion by 2015

US demand for janitorial equipment and supplies is forecast to advance more than two percent annually to surpass $6.5 billion in 2015. This growth reflects an improvement over the weaker gains registered during the 2005-2010 period due to the economic recession that occurred during the latter half of that period. Advances will be supported by ongoing new product enhancements. These innovations will be primarily focused on better ergonomic design, and developments that lessen noise to alllow use during daytime cleaning operations. Expansion will also be aided by growth in floor space in the institutional building market, a key user of janitorial equipment and supplies, driven in large part by the rising number of health care establishments.

Wet mops, wipes to pace key manual cleaning products segment

Janitorial equipment and supplies include manual cleaning products, bags and containers, automated floor cleaners, and other products and accessories. Manual cleaning products, which accounted for the largest share of demand in 2010, are expected to see above-average sales gains through 2015. Mauual cleaning products was also the only segment that did not see declines in the 2005-2010 period; given that many of these products are inexpensive and have comparatively short useful lifespans, with sales continuing even during the recession. Despite the maturity of most manual cleaning products, certain categories will experience rapid gains, benefiting from ongoing product innovation. For example, wet mops and wipes will post rapid growth supported by the ongoing development of more ergonomic and longer-lasting wet mops and higher-value, task-specific wipes.

Institutional buildings to be fastest growing market

The institutional building market is projected to post the fastest gains of any major market segment through 2015. Advances in this market will be supported by an improvement in construction expenditures and increasing floor space through the forecast period, as well as growing concerns over contamination and air quality in schools and health care facilities. The industrial building market will post the second-fastest gains through 2015, driven by worker health and safety concerns and rising manufacturing output, which will generate the need for more cleaning supplies. Regionally, demand will rise the fastest in the South and the West through 2015, driven by population growth and general economic expansion.

Contract cleaners demand to outpace in-house buyers

Businesses will increasingly use contract cleaners to reduce overhead costs rather than in-house janitorial staff. As a result, janitorial equipment and supplies purchased by contract cleaners are forecast to outpace growth in sales to inhouse buyers. The use of contract cleaners varies significantly by market; however, outsourced cleaning services will take share away from in-house janitorial staff across the board in all markets.
