Global demand to rise over 4% annually through 2015

World power tool demand is projected to rise over four percent per year, approaching $30 billion in 2015. Advances will result from rising incomes and advances in residential and nonresidential building construction activity. In addition, rising manufacturing output will create opportunities in the professional market. The ongoing development of new products will also boost gains, as both consumers and professional tool users seek tools with increased power and convenience. The US market will provide solid opportunities, reflecting a turnaround in the current housing crisis, as well as continued enthusiasm for do-it-yourself projects by US consumers.

India, China to post strongest gains in demand

China will post strong gains, as the nation continues robust growth in construction expenditures. India will also record rapid increases in power tool demand, at over seven percent annually through 2015. Japan and Western Europe will continue to see gains that considerably lag the global average.

Electric tools to remain leading type of power tool

Electric tools (plug-in and cordless) dominate world demand, representing over 70 percent of power tool sales in 2010. Electric tools (most notably hand drills) will remain the leading type of power tool, due to frequent use in both consumer and professional applications. Cordless products will continue to post the best gains, benefiting not only from macroeconomic factors but from their performance advantages vis-a-vis plug-in models. Gains for pneumatic tools will benefit from rising manufacturing output, as well as from growing construction spending.

Professional tool demand to outpace consumer market

Professional users accounted for the majority of the world power tool market in 2010, due to their use of a greater variety of more expensive tools compared to consumers. Gains in professional tool demand will outpace those of the consumer market through 2015, due to the rising number of construction and manufacturing professionals. However, rising standards of living will boost consumer demand, as will continued interest in DIY activities, particularly in developed markets such as the US.
