Abstract
Global demand to rise 9% annually through 2015
Global demand for membranes is projected to increase a healthy 9.0 percent
annually to $19.3 billion in 2015. The countries that will see the fastest
growth include the BRIC countries and others with large, developing industrial
bases and stressed local water resources. Economic recovery from the global
recession of 2009 that restrained manufacturing activity and capital
investments will boost gains through 2015 in several key markets. Going
forward, rising environmental standards and regulations in many parts of the
world, and high population growth, particularly in waterstressed areas, will
further drive investment in membrane-based water and wastewater systems.
Increased attention paid to food and beverage safety regulations and interest
in water re-use and material reclamation will also propel membrane sales.
US to account for largest share of growth
North America, the largest regional market, accounted for 33 percent of global
membrane sales in 2010 and will advance 8.3 percent annually through 2015, a
healthy rate but below the global average. Gains in the dominant US market are
projected to be aided by the ongoing development of new and better performing
membranes and related systems for existing markets, as well as upgrades of
water treatment techniques to accommodate the use of low quality water
resources in the water-stressed regions. Also, a growing number of industries
use membranes to reduce water use and waste disposal expenditures. Western
Europe and Japan are fairly comparable to the US in terms of the maturity of
their water infrastructures, regulatory schemes, and the technological
sophistication of local manufacturing. While their gains will be well below
the global average through 2015, these areas will exhibit recovery in membrane
demand from a reduced 2010 base as their economies improve following a period
of economic weakness.
In developing countries, growth is based on the ongoing development of
waterintensive industries, increased need to tap brackish or otherwise poor
quality water resources, and rising investment in modernizing water and waste
infrastructure. However, in many of the least developed countries --
especially in Africa and South Asia -- growth will be more limited due to lack
of adequate funding and local corruption that impedes progress.
Water treatment to remain largest market
Much of the Middle East, North Africa and the Caribbean has invested heavily
in seawater and brackish water treatment to ensure a sufficient supply of
water for drinking, agricultural and industrial purposes. Although
historically much of that came from thermal distillation plants, even oil-rich
nations are increasingly shifting to more efficient reverse osmosis
desalination systems. Other countries, including Australia, China, India,
Japan, Singapore and the US, have also added membrane-based desalination
capacity in recent years. While the water treatment market will continue to
account for the largest share of global membrane demand through 2015, the best
opportunities for growth will emerge in pharmaceutical and medical
applications, and other smaller markets, as these industries continue to
develop globally and create new uses for membranes.
