Abstract
US market to surpass $10 billion by 2015
US demand for advanced lighting is forecast to surpass $10 billion by 2015 on
annual increases of about eight percent. A government-mandated phaseout of
less efficient general service lamps will drive gains in the residential
market, while a trend toward energy-efficient lighting will fuel growth in
other markets.
LEDs, CFLs to benefit from phaseout of incandescents
Through 2015, demand for light emitting diodes (LEDs) will post the fastest
gains, spurred in part by their replacement of general service incandescent
lamps. Improvements in power and quality of light coupled with a dramatic
decrease in the price of LEDs will greatly expand their use in general
lighting applications. By 2015, LEDs will also become the chief source of
backlighting for consumer goods with LCD displays.
Historically, demand for advanced lighting has been limited in residential
applications by the popularity of general service incandescent lamps. Starting
in January 2012, however, the Energy independence and Security Act of 2007
will limit US lighting sales to products that can meet certain energy
efficiency standards. Traditional 100 watt, 75 watt, 60 watt and 40 watt
incandescents that are unable to meet the new standards will be phased out
over a three-year period ending in 2014, causing a shift in the residential
market toward advanced lighting. Products such as compact fluorescent lamps
(CFLs), halogen lamps, and LEDs stand to benefit the most. The Act will have a
less pronounced effect on advanced lighting used in other markets, where
general service incandescents are far less commonly used.
By 2015, CFLs will lead the residential market for advanced lighting in terms
of units. The push toward more efficient lighting, however, will extend the
overall average useful life of lighting products used in residential
applications, thereby reducing the rate at which worn out products are
replaced. This reduction in replacement demand, historically the largest
source of lighting demand, will limit value growth for CFLs through 2015. In
addition, the presence of mercury in CFLs, an issue that has deterred
residential consumers from adopting CFLs in the past, will continue to hamper
sales. In the long run, as mercury-free LED solutions for general lighting
become less expensive and more widely available, US residential demand for
advanced lighting is forecast to shift away from CFLs toward LEDs.
Metal halide lamps, LEDs to drive motor vehicle market
A projected rebound in motor vehicle manufacturing will drive steady growth in
advanced lighting demand in the motor vehicle market through 2015. Though
advanced lighting products already account for a majority of the lighting
used in motor vehicles, the motor vehicle market has been gradually moving
away from the use of halogen lamps in favor of metal halide lamps and LEDs.
Metal halide lamps, used predominantly as headlights because of the superior
visibility they offer, will see growth as more manufacturers include them as
standard options on motor vehicles. LEDs, which are just beginning to find use
in headlights, will benefit from growth in the production of electric powered
vehicles, as highly efficient LED headlights can extend an electric vehicle's
range of travel by several miles per charge.
