Abstract
US revenues to exceed $100 billion in 2015
Waste management and remediation revenues in the US are projected to rise 5.0
percent annually to $105 billion in 2015. Demand for waste management and
remediation services will continue to benefit from population growth, new
household formation and resurgent construction activity, increasing the need
for waste collection and treatment, and disposal services. Concerns about
indoor air quality and stricter environmental standards will support
increasing demand for remediation and materials recovery services. Waste
collection remains the largest component of demand, accounting for more than
55 percent of total revenues in 2010.
However, revenues for waste collection, as well as waste treatment and
disposal, will increase more slowly than revenues for remediation and
materials recovery services. Market maturity, coupled with a growing emphasis
on source reduction and recycling, will moderate growth potential for
traditional waste collection and disposal services.
Service industries to pace market growth
Government and residential customers are the leading markets for waste
management and remediation services, accounting for nearly three-fifths of the
total in 2010. However, service industries will continue to post more rapid
growth, reflecting gains in the service economy as a whole; and the
construction and demolition market will record the greatest gains, as
construction activity rebounds from a very weak 2010 base. Demand for waste
management services in the manufacturing and trade markets will also improve,
as the economy gradually strengthens through 2015.
Increasingly, companies in the waste management industry seek alternatives to
the traditional waste collection and disposal business model. Opposition to
new incineration and landfill operations and stricter regulations have
prompted companies to develop new revenue streams, such as waste-to-energy,
recycling and biofuels production. Materials recovery and other waste
recycling services will post the largest gains through 2015, albeit from a
comparatively small 2010 base.
Study coverage
This new Freedonia industry study, “Waste Management & Remediation
Services” presents historical demand data
(2000, 2005 and 2010) plus forecasts for 2015 and 2020 by service (waste
collection, waste treatment and disposal, remediation and materials recovery)
and by market (government, residential, service industries, manufacturing
industries, construction and demolition, retail and wholesale trade, and other
