META Description
The history of Aloka began in 1950 when the medical equipment department of
Japan Radio Company became an independent company, Medical and Physical
Institute Co Ltd. In 1976, the company' s name was changed to Aloka, which
means "ray of hope" in ancient Sanskrit.
Aloka' s operations are divided within three product segments: Electronic
Medical Systems (including diagnostic ultrasound systems, bone densitometry
systems and medical treatment and surgery systems), General Analysis Systems
(including radiation measuring instruments, radio control instruments,
analysis systems using radiation and bio-related systems) and Medical Analysis
Systems (laboratory test systems, pipettors, and emission and spectroscopic
analysis systems). This profile focuses on the Electronic Medical Systems
activities.
As a manufacturer of medical ultrasound equipment, Aloka' s most significant
achievements include the development of the world' s first diagnostic

operates 40 domestic and 16 overseas business establishments, including
subsidiaries. The company' s US headquarters is located in Wallingford,
Connecticut, and its European headquarters is in Zug, Switzerland. Aloka
exports its products to more than 150 countries.
In 1992, Aloka formed a joint venture in Shanghai, China. The joint venture,
Shanghai Aloka Medical Equipment Co Ltd, was the first Sino-Japanese joint
venture producing medical ultrasonic diagnostic apparatus in China. A joint
venture with Trivitron Medical Systems in India was established in April 2009
and is producing ultrasound systems for the Asian markets. Aloka' s competitors
include Drager Medical, GE Healthcare, Siemens, Toshiba and Philips.
