Executive summary

2008 a stronger year for Indonesia

Domestic electrical appliances experienced another promising year in 2008, posting double-digit volume growth. Consumer base expansion still drove the growth, as more households can afford to purchase domestic electrical appliances. With a lot of households still having quite limited knowledge about the right kind of domestic electrical appliances to purchase, advertising has played a very key role for manufacturers wanting to attract consumers to their products. Television advertising was essential in 2008, be it for rice cookers or air conditioners.

Home laundry appliances are best performers in 2008

There are several products within domestic electrical appliances that performed very well in 2008, ranging from air treatment products to home laundry appliances. Home laundry appliances, however, showed the best volume growth within the industry in 2008, with more households being able to afford the purchase of washing machines. Whilst the practice of hand-washing clothes is still very common in most Indonesian households, washing machines are becoming more accessible and more households make this a priority purchase compared to other types of domestic electrical appliances.

Star Cosmos PT retains its leadership

Multinational companies, especially those from Japan and South Korea, have quite a strong presence in the competitive landscape of domestic electrical appliances in Indonesia. Nonetheless, local companies still have respectable presence. In fact, already from 2006 up to 2008, the local company Star Cosmos PT managed to retain a slim leadership of the market ahead of renowned multinational Panasonic Global Indonesia PT. Both companies have seen their volume share eroded by other players as the competition has intensified and the industry has become less consolidated. However, Star Cosmos PT managed to hang on to its leadership in 2008 thanks to a wide product portfolio that able to provide stability to overall company performance even though it saw a slight loss in share.

Further strong growth expected in forecast period

The market potential of domestic electrical appliances in Indonesia is still far from being fully tapped, and continued growth in the forecast period will come largely from increased penetration of the products. Whilst volume CAGR in the forecast period will not reach the double-digit rate shown in 2008, it will still be a very strong performance in actual increase of volumes sold to consumers. Increased disposable income and stronger product knowledge will be key drivers for expansion of the consumer base.
