stand-alone restaurants and eating establishments in which the consumer can
freely choose to eat. The report looks at market trends by sector (cafes/bars,
full-service restaurants, fast food, home delivery and street stalls). It

Executive summary
Spanish economy shapes consumer foodservice (CFS) sales
Poor economic performance hampered the performance of CFS sales in 2009. The
dramatic unemployment rate of over 19% constrained average disposable incomes
in Spain and has resulted in a reduction in the amount of money Spaniards use
for outside the home expenditure, thereby damaging overall CFS performance.
Moreover, during 2009 a high number of consumers shifted their consumption
from full-service restaurants to cheaper options such as fast food outlets
whose sales showed reasonable performance remaining stagnant over the previous
year, having benefited from the economic downturn and consumers' coping
strategies.
Impact of legislation on CFS sales
The number of laws enacted by the Spanish government during the review period
has been numerous such as the ban on smoking in 2005 which is set to be
replaced by a tougher version from January 2011. In addition, there has also
been the prohibition of advertising of extra large portions, regulations
restricting opening hours and outlet locations, and wider regulations such as
NAOS (strategy for nutrition, physical activity, and prevention of obesity).
Furthermore, the new food safety and nutrition law (Ley de seguridad
alimentaria y nutricion) has impacted the performance of the CFS industry, by
increasing awareness among the population about health and wellness issues and
shaping menus and new business developments within the CFS industry.
Pizza Hut leaves Spain
2009 brought few surprises to the Spanish CFS ranking with the company
TelePizza ranking first in terms of number of outlets in Spain. The company
was followed by Heineken, Burger King and McDonald' s. However, the end of the
agreement between Spanish Zena Group and North American Yum! Brands caused the
disappearance of Pizza Hut from the Spanish market. With this agreement
broken, a new agreement between Zena Group and Domino' s Pizza Inc brought
Domino' s Pizza to the Spanish CFS market in 2009.
Shopping centres support chains
In response to the newer patterns of urbanisation, a new generation of
macro-malls, generally anchored by a large mixed retailer, has sprouted in the
Spanish suburban landscape to cater to the shopping, leisure and entertainment
needs of these suburban Spanish families. In 2009, there were some 514
shopping centres, and although the pace of openings has slowed down, the
importance of shopping centres is helping chained outlets gain ground to the
detriment of independent outlets in Spain,
Gloomy future
According to the IMF, OECD and European Commission, Spain is expected to be
one of the countries to take a longer time to emerge from the economic crisis,
which will not occur until mid-2010, according to national official sources,
or possibly even later. In Spain, the rate of unemployment is likely to be
especially dramatic and reach over 20% of the active population by the end of
2010. This will result in uncertainty among Spanish consumers which will
affect CFS sales until the economic situation recovers due to the
non-essential nature of CFS expenditure.
