Abstract

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Decline in Foodservice Transactions in 2009

The number of foodservice transactions in Colombia declined during 2009. The economic downturn in Colombia was not as deep as in the rest of the world but still affected the behaviour of some consumers who reduced visits to and expenditure within restaurants. However, not all areas experienced decreases in transactions, with 100% home delivery/takeaway, self-service cafeterias, and independent street stalls/kiosks all recording increases, mainly because of their offering of low prices. Full service restaurants was the most hard hit area and was followed by cafes/bars and fast food.

Year of Consolidation for Full Service Outlets

While the economic slowdown was not as severe in Colombia during 2009 as in other countries, the psychological impact of the global financial crisis still convinced many consumers to reduce expenditure on eating out. In an attempt to offer quality menus at affordable prices, some entrepreneurs opened new establishments which struggled to perform well as a result of the challenging economic environment. In addition, some non-competitive establishments failed to adapt to the economic situation and were consequently forced to close due to declining customer numbers. Ultimately, the winners were those companies that were well established in the Colombian market and that did not fall into the trap of making aggressive price reductions or unnecessary promotions in order to gain more customers. Overall, there was a marginal increase in the number of outlets during 2009.

Sales of Foreign Brands Boosted by New Openings

Although local companies still dominate foodservice sales in Colombia, multinational sales increased slightly faster than those of local outlets during 2009. Among the best foreign performers were Hard Rock Cafe, McDonald' s, Hooters, Burger King, and Cinnabon, with sales being boosted by the opening of new outlets. Domestic brands that performed well, recording double digit growth, were Archies Pizza, Crepes & Waffles, Pizza 1969, Helados Popsy, and Frisby.

No Increase in Number of Standalone Outlets

The number of standalone locations remained stable during 2009 - a disappointing performance when considering overall review period growth. The challenging economic environment hampered growth, with standalone transactions falling sharply as some consumers curbed spending, especially within full service standalone outlets. Although retail outlets fared better than standalone locations, growth was still sluggish in comparison with the review period average due to the fact that foodservice operators concentrated on consolidation as opposed to expansion.

Slow Improvement in Employment Rates May Hinder Future Expansion

Foodservice transactions will recover over the forecast period. Indeed, the area is expected to make a full recovery over the next year or two. However, uncertainty with regard to unemployment will continue to have a negative impact on consumer confidence and consumption rates during the first years of the forecast period. Chained foodservice outlets are expected to fare better than independent outlets and a number of new brands are expected to appear via the expansion of franchises.
