Executive summary

Economic climate leads to poor results for consumer foodservice in Chile

In 2008, the consumer foodservice market recorded the worst performance observed over the review period. The hike in food and energy prices followed by the global financial crisis eroded disposable income as well as consumer confidence in the future stability of their jobs. As a consequence, most people reduced their spending, which in the case of consumer foodservice, meant fewer visits to their favourite restaurants or switches to less expensive formats and lower-value orders. In constant value terms, sales continued declining for a second consecutive year in 2008, while margins dropped as inflation rose increasing costs with sector players having scarce opportunity to transfer rising costs onto consumers in the form of higher prices.

Retailing projects delayed until times improve

The effects of the financial crisis affected most retail companies and Cencosud' s Costanera Center unfinished building emerged as a witness to these difficult times. Cencosud' s shopping mall project was added to the list of delayed or even aborted projects. Retailers have really understood Chilean preferences regarding location and offering, and leading consumer foodservice players have developed based on retail locations. However, lower investments in retail have obliged consumer foodservice players to revisit their plans and decide if they should also postpone some openings or select less attractive locations outside shopping malls and strip centres. Most players have at least altered their plans and schedules for new outlet openings.

Newcomers make an entrance

The consumer foodservice industry has started to reconfigure with new entrants to the market and changes in companies' property, which intensified competition. Despite the economic slowdown, the Chilean market remains attractive to multinationals. In 2008, Juan Valdez (specialist coffee shop) entered the market and Wal-Mart took control of Distribución y Servicios D&S deciding to launch El Buen Corte (FSR chain). However, 2008, not only recorded success stories. Domestic fast food players had problems coping with competition from multinationals, and some international players left the market. Hooters closed because it could not achieve expected results and Esso sold its petrol stations to Petrobras.

New casinos provide opportunities for growth

Expansion of consumer foodservice nationwide has been based on retail locations, but by 2008, new casinos widened the opportunities to find attractive locations nationwide. The 17 new casinos began operating and most host several consumer foodservice outlets including full-service restaurants, fast food and specialist coffee shops. In addition to restaurants inside casinos, several projects include shopping centres that feature a food court. Casino openings have influenced the development of the transport infrastructure which provide access to them. Retailers, petrol stations with forecourt fast food, and independent foodservice outlets have emerged alongside. The impact of the new casinos is not only limited to new locations but has also contributed to raising the food quality and service levels throughout the country.

Middle class should return to growth and at a faster pace

At the beginning of 2009, the Chilean economy was performing at a lower level than in the previous year, which is likely to translate to some really poor results. However, after then sales should start to recover. As the economy rebounds, the circumstances of an ever larger number of low-income consumers will improve and many will adopt middle class consumption patterns, which will benefit foodservice sales. A robust rising middle class will attract investments to second tier cities and emergent neighbourhoods, which should fuel the expansion of consumer foodservice players to these areas and incorporate these customers into foodservice demand.
