This IDC Energy Insights study highlights the top 10 predictions for the Asia/Pacific Utility Industry in 2012. In 2011, the region was still recovering from the downturn that plagued the world in 2009. However, the state of utility industry in Asia is far from ideal, under the twin pressures of the need to improve EE as well as to create sustainable business models. The utility industry will be increasingly stretched to comply with the expectations of all stakeholders, both internal and external, as well as the country's regulatory framework. At the same time, new business models that are getting increasingly complex are evolving. The level of collaboration that is required between utility companies, business partners, and customers in order to create overall efficiency, can only be achieved if there is a clear demarcation of roles and responsibilities, as well as the creation of a win-win business model, with respect to customer ownership, retention, and value creation. According to Debashis Tarafdar, head of Asia/Pacific Energy Insights, "Over the next few years, utility companies will undertake initiatives to enhance operational efficiency and productivity, as well as better engage customers, and set key performance indicators (KPIs) to improve the quality and reliability of service. IT and OSs will increasingly converge, but the key to success will be the adoption of open standards. In addition, IT should become a strategic partner to business."
