This IDC Energy Insights report provides analysis of the home energy management (HEM) technology stack based on our interviews with utility decision makers including chief information officers (CIOs) and solution providers. Many utilities are somewhere on the continuum of piloting programs such as demand response, load control, energy efficiency, and customer education; all of them could involve home energy management. Although utility professionals are busy planning for the next wave of energy management pilots, the technology is not yet fully ready. The technology choices aren't clear to utility professionals while many communication standards are still forming. This means that utility professionals have to carefully select the technologies that show promise and also look for alternative deployment paths.

"Technology selection and deployment options are very confusing at this time," says Usman Sindhu, senior research analyst, Utilities and Oil and Gas, IDC Energy Insights. "Utilities are in need of clear choices and tangible approaches to enable home energy management. Unfortunately, the market is not going to get better any time soon. Therefore, utility professionals, especially energy management and IT folks, have to team up in selecting the right technology and business model."
