Abstract
This IDC Energy Insights report looks at the coming plug-in
electric vehicle (PEV) rollout and forecasts the size and timing
of the rollout in North America, Europe, Asia, and the
rest of the world. Plug-in electric vehicles are coming in
large numbers over the next few years. IDC Energy Insights
forecasts that there will be over 885,000 PEVs sold in
North America, almost 800,000 in Europe, and 2.7 million worldwide
by 2015, and PEV penetration rates could reach as much
as 4% of the global automotive fleet by 2020. Even
in this aggressive scenario, the overall impact on utility revenue
and electricity demand will be relatively limited, with PEVs consuming
approximately the same amount of electricity as electric clothes dryers
do.
"Electric vehicles have been promised for more than three decades,
so it' s understandable that some people in the electric utilities
industry are skeptical," says IDC Energy Insights Research Manager Sam
Jaffe. "But this time is different: they will be arriving
in driveways in large numbers over the next few years
and they will be plugging into the grid."
