Abstract

This IDC Energy Insights report assesses the settings where meter data management (MDM) is best to be used for business and operational intelligence or as a production system or both. With the installation of smart meters, utilities and retail energy providers can benefit from having granular meter data available on their customers and their network. Utilities are grappling with the question of how much data should be stored in the MDM, how quickly the data should be made available, and how the staff that needs it can easily access the intelligence that can be gleaned from that data.

According to Jill Feblowitz, practice director, IDC Energy Insights, "Utilities with meters deployed to millions of customers will move away from using the MDM as a data warehouse and instead rely on other means of storing the data for analysis."
