Abstract

Summary

Due to declining ARPU Japanese mobile operators are creating new streams of income independent of voice or data traffic. This paradigm shift led DoCoMo to invest in financial institutions, create a credit brand, and make a series of other investments including brick-and-mortar business, while competing operators follow different strategies. The present report gives a comprehensive overview of the variety of mobile payment services in operation in Japan, explains in detail how several proven mobile payment systems work, and explains the trends for mobile payments, transactions and mobile credit. The report describes the fundamental shift of paradigm occuring in the wireless communication industry and driven from Japan.

Our reports are purchased world-wide by telecom operators, telecom equipment providers, semiconductor chip makers, software makers, consulting firms, investment banks, students at business schools, Universities, Embassies, and many other professionals who need to gain an in-depth and practical understanding of mobile communications and other high-tech business in Japan. Our reports and our authors are widely quoted in the business press, including CNBC, Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, Economist, RedHerring and more.

The first version of this report was prepared to brief the steering committee of the global Mobile Payment Forum, which consists of the mobile payment program managers at the world' s top credit card companies, mobile phone handset makers, and mobile operators. Later versions were used to brief the CTO of a major financial institution, the top strategy team (CEO, CTO and VPs) of one of Europe' s largest mobile operators, and for many other training and briefing purposes.
