Abstract
Despite the global recession, Europe remains a leading global wind power
market, with growth shifting from mature onshore markets to newer growth areas
in Eastern Europe and offshore. More than ever, utilities are leveraging wind
to compete, though there are still issues to be resolved including
transmission build-out, energy mix balance, long-term incentives, and new
turbine roll-outs. Led by development in Southern Europe, the European wind
energy market will add over 152 GW of new capacity between 2009 and 2020.
A new study from Emerging Energy Research, Europe Wind Power Markets and
Strategies, 2009 - 2020, analyzes trends in market growth, competitive
shifts along the value chain, and emerging investment opportunities. Where is
remaining wind potential in Europe and how can you tap into it? What are the
key trends in turbine, project, and portfolio size?
Key findings in this study include:
- Europe‘s renewables commitment drives sustained wind growth:
The EU' s passage of binding 20-20-20 targets, to be approved in 2010, reaffirm
the region' s commitment to renewables and pave the way for sustained wind
development. Onshore wind will contribute 28% and offshore wind will
contribute 7% of new capacity built between 2009 and 2020 in the EU-25.
- Value chain consolidates around larger players. A new wave of
consolidation is underway providing significant M&A opportunities for
financially solid utilities and large industrial-related IPPs looking to
accelerate the growth of their RES portfolios. With developers running short
on cash to finance their pipelines, new acquisition opportunities may arise as
early as 2010.
- Europe' s turbine vendors face drop in demand and shifting focus to US
and Asia, looking to offshore for new growth. Onshore turbine prices are
falling while vendors experience production overcapacity problems. As a
result, Europe' s wind turbine industry has been forced to restructure its
production capacity to adjust to the current demand level and capture future
growth with new turbine models targeting offshore.
- Europe remains epicenter of offshore wind. Led by development in
the UK and Germany, offshore wind is expected to account for as much as 27% of
new capacity in 2020.
