New global land rig market study forecasts strong growth

The onshore drilling rig market is set to expand to more than 9,100 units over the next four years, driven by increasing volume and complexity of well requirements. The new World Land Drilling Rig Market Report 2011-2015 published by award - winning energy business advisors Douglas-Westwood, suggests an increasingly important role for frontier markets globally with an estimated 57% of active rig demand coming from regions outside North America by 2015. Substantial increases in production will see strong growth of drilling activity in China, India and Iraq, for example; while investment in enhanced oil recovery techniques in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait are expected to boost productivity in some of the world' s largest maturing fields.

Douglas-Westwood estimates that growth in land rig demand will average in excess of 5% per annum over the next five years. While the mature environments of Brazil, Egypt and Indonesia are likely to witness a flat profile, other important markets including China, Colombia, Russia, Saudi Arabia and the USA are all expected to see a considerable increase in the number of active rigs. Significant newbuild and the updating of current fleets (which have suffered from a lack of investment over the last three decades) will be necessary to meet the augmented level of demand expected by 2015.

Addressing an Industry Problem

The quantity and, more importantly, quality of available information to the industry on the international rig fleet and drilling demand is limited, even in major markets such as MENA and Russia.

Douglas-Westwood has been monitoring the global land drilling market for a number of years and has performed numerous commissioned studies into ' frontier' areas. Through our large client network formed of NOCs, IOCs and independents, national and small independent drilling companies, we have developed a unique, encompassing global database of land rigs, which has been central to generating valuable insight into lesser-known markets within Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.

A Unique Market Report

Douglas-Westwood' s World Land Drilling Rig Market Report provides for the first time analysis of rig demand, fleet quality & specification. It forecasts potential rig construction or import requirements to fulfill growth in demand and alleviate the degradation of the global land fleet. The report goes a long way to filling in some of the blanks found in drilling market analysis and will be pivotal to understanding future equipment availability in all key countries.

It presents analysis based on unique and proprietary data:

  • Comprehensive country-by-country analysis of over 40 key activity centres
  • Historic and forecast drilling activity from 2006 to 2015
  • Active rig requirements - supply & demand analysis
  • Historic dayrate range and likely evolution
  • Construction / import requirements to satisfy demand growth
  • Overview of major competition - indigenous, western & oil co inhouse
  • Discussion of market trends and prospects within each region
  • Review of driving factors in global land drilling
