|

Abstract
Introduction:
The infectious disease (ID) vaccine pipeline is robust (vetted to 164 agents
from an initial list of 585 total vaccines in clinical development across all
therapeutic areas), a notable finding given the long length of time it takes
to develop a vaccine and the many vaccines already available. However,
indications such as HIV have high demand for the development of a first
vaccine, and even routine vaccinations, such as those for influenza or
diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTP), can be improved in terms of safety
and efficacy. Such unmet needs are driving the continued development of ID
vaccines.
Questions Answered in This Report:
- Vaccinations are in development for a wide array of infectious diseases,
from those for which vaccines already exist to those for which no vaccines are
on the market. Why is this variety of vaccines needed? Which diseases are
receiving the most attention from developers?
- Physicians (ID specialists, PCPs, and pediatricians) surveyed by Decision
Resources have diverse opinions regarding the unmet needs of the ID vaccine
pipeline. What are the diseases with the greatest unmet need in terms of
vaccines, according to each physician specialty? Is there any consensus among
the specialties regarding unmet needs?
- The ID vaccine market is poised to grow 15% over 2010-2017. What is the
projected size of the market during this period? How is year-over-year market
growth expected to increase or decline over this time frame?
Scope:
- Markets covered: United States, rest of world (ROW).
- Primary research: February/March 2011 survey of 106 ID specialists,
PCPs, and pediatricians.
- Emerging vaccines: Phase I: 73 vaccines; Phase II: 64 vaccines;

- Market forecast features: Market statistics of the ID vaccine
market from 2006 through 2017.
- Data-rich content: 42 tables and figures that detail our pipeline,
market, and survey data.
