A number of key trends recur through the analysis of individual markets in this report. These trends include the shift from in-house facilities towards colocation and outsourced space, the shift from physical servers towards virtualized and software-defined architectures and cloud-enabled services and the blurring of the traditional boundaries between capital investment and operating costs.
None of these major trends impacts each and every market in exactly the same way. However, this report indicates a further mega-trend - that of globalization. The division between the “established” markets of North America, Western Europe and the Asia- Pacific and the “emerging” markets elsewhere has been eroded as the size of major emerging data center markets has surpassed the size of many established markets and the technological gap that may have existed has narrowed as technologies and learnings are shared. The world still has its alpha market - the United States - which in all probability will continue to lead the IT and data center world for decades to come butmarkets that are now emerging recognise that they do not have to follow the route that established markets followed. Just as their citizens are not following the desktop/laptop route to the Internet but going straight to smartphone and tablet, so their businesses are not necessarily following the traditional in-house server and data center route to meeting IT requirements. The ability to take such short cuts depends on the availability of local skills and services but only a few markets have not yet taken them. These are not markets where servers and data centers are “filling in” in the meantime but markets where the whole industry is embryonic.
Thus the time may have come for replacing the terms “established” and “emerging” (which occur in a number of fields, not just data centers) and the value systems those terms represent with simpler terminology - “longer established” and “more recently established” since the difference between the older markets and the younger ones is now one of degree rather than a difference of kind.
