As the volume of DCIM-related marketing continues to grow, it seems that an ever growing number of suppliers are attempting to enter an already crowded DCIM market. At the same time, the cautious pattern of consideration and adoption of DCIM raises some questions about market perceptions of DCIM solutions.
This paper examines data on DCIM decision-making (and breaking) from the 2012 and 2013 Census. It tracks organizations and follows their DCIM decision-making across two waves of the Census rather than having to rely on implied changes between different samples in different years.
The data points to a decision-making cycle that is different to that for most other solutions in and around the data center. This is made more complex by the inclusive and discontinuous nature of most DCIM introductions. It may also suggest that marketing DCIM systems based entirely on the exposition and demonstration of rational benefit may not be maximising the opportunity, and that there may be benefits in tackling the reasons that are causing doubt and delay in deployment decisions.
