Overview
Introduction
In order to convert a compliance issue into a business advantage, manufacturers are starting to seek a deeper and more meaningful relationship with RFID enabled processes. Simultaneously, standards bodies and IT vendors are addressing a broader yet critical issue - global data synchronization.
Scope
- Feedback from a recent manufacturing end-user survey on RFID investment outlook.
- Vendor activities & a brief news review of areas which could be drivers of the value RFID-enabled processes can bring to the manufacturing sector.
- Activities beyond the edge to edge / mandate projects that have occupied many suppliers in 2004.
Report Highlights
GDS will not happen overnight, but the efforts being made, and the expected uptake of data cleaning & synchronization solutions to enable better management of internal data, offers hope that this issue will be fast-tracked, and will create much needed visibility into the value that RFID can deliver to the manufacturing markets.
Manufacturers should spend time identifying problematic business areas (e.g. stock-outs, high labor costs, shrinkage, high inventory levels, etc.) where small-scale RFID pilots could be focused. Positive pilot project returns are a key early goal when justifying investment in a relatively immature solution area.
