Abstract
Introduction
This tool was created to analyze the growth in Telecom service providers'
subscribers globally. Dittberner surveyed 331 service providers in 78
countries, three geographic regions (c America, Africa and CIS), and two
administrative regions (Hong Kong and Puerto Rico), which represents 97%
of the world' s population and over 98% of all subscribers. In some instances
results were obtained for a country but it was not possible to assign the
subscribers to a particular service provider. In this case the service
provider was listed as "Other." If you have any questions or comments, please
contact us.
1) Scope of Tool
This workbook has the compiled data of Dittberner' s global survey of service
providers. The focus is on the fixed and mobile network operators'
subscribers. This data was acquired through use of service provider data,
interviews, and Dittberner' s extensive databases. This tool is meant to
augment the other Dittberner tools, "BBA Market Share Analysis", which is an
analysis of the quarterly port shipments by vendors of DSL and FTTH equipment,
and " BBA Installed Base", which details the number of ports shipped to each
service provider by the equipment vendors. So, in summary, "BBA market
Analysis" details the shipments made by vendors, " BBA Installed Base",
details who the vendors shipped the equipment to, and this tool details who
the service provider is serving with this equipment.
2) Rationale for Tool
Dittberner created this new tool as a service to its customers. There are many
reasons why an analysis of the subscriber market growth is important:
- a) This tool allows Dittberner' s customers to identify the service
providers who are experiencing the fastest growth.
- b) It allows our customers to determine which Regions, Sub-regions
or countries are attractive markets by showing the rate of growth and which
access technology is preferred.
- c) It also makes visible which technologies are growing fastest.
- d) Although the subscriber base is growing, much of the equipment
shipments are going to replace older installed equipment. Monitoring the
growth in subscribers allows the determination of the progress of the network
upgrades undertaken by individual service providers.
3) Explanation of Sorting Terms:
a) Quarter: the calendar year quarter. Currently there are 2007Q4,
2008Q1,2008Q2 and 2008Q3. Although "ALL" is a choice, it would add the
subscribers in all quarters together, which is not meaningful.
b) Region: this is the geographic region of the world. This tool
conforms to the common four regions of the world: NA-North America,
CALA-Caribbean and Latin America, EMEA-Europe, Middle east and Africa, APAC-
Asia and Pacific. Due to the spread of the telecommunication industry to many
emerging markets that previously were much smaller, Dittberner has further
divided the regions into sub-regions.
The sub-regions in each region are:
- i) NA
- ii) CALA
- Central America
- South America
- iii) EMEA
- Western Europe
- Eastern Europe
- Middle East and North Africa
- Central and South Africa
- iv) APAC
- Asia
- Indian Ocean and Central Asia
- South Pacific
c) Sub-region: geographic areas that comprise regions.
Sub-regions are usually based on locality, linguistics, and historical ties.
The growth of emerging markets has prompted re-evaluating how the regions are
classified and has caused Dittberner to provide further granularity in its
analysis. The sub-region classifications are not perfect, but do attempt to
group similar countries together based on level of development and other
factors. The sub-regions and the countries that comprise them that are covered
in this survey are:
- i) NA
- ii) C America
- Mexico C America (for the rest of Central America and the Caribbean)
- iii) S America
- Argentina Chile
- Brazil Peru
- Colombia Venezuela
- iv) W Europe
- Austria France Holland Norway Sweden
- Belgium Germany Ireland Portugal Switzerland
- Denmark Greece Italy Spain United Kingdom
- v) E Europe
- Belarus Czech Republic Hungary Macedonia Serbia Russia
- Bulgaria Estonia Latvia Montenegro Slovak Republic Ukraine
- Croatia Finland Lithuania Poland Slovenia
- vi) MENA
- Algeria Iraq Morocco Syria
- Bahrain Israel Qatar Turkey
- Egypt Jordan Saudi Arabia United Arab Emirates
- vii) C &S Africa
- Kenya Nigeria Senegal South Africa Africa (for the Rest of Africa)
- viii) Asia
- China Korea Viet Nam
- Hong Kong Taiwan
- Japan Thailand
- ix) S Pacific
- Australia New Zealand
- Indonesia Philippines
- x) IOCA
- BanglaDesh India Iran Malaysia Pakistan Singapore
- CIS (for Armenia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan)
d) Country: the country the service provider is operating in.
The country is usually the political entity. An exception is Hong Kong, which
is a special administrative region of China, but handled separately for
historical and developmental reason. Also, C America, Africa and CIS are
groups of local countries.
e) Access Technology: the type of technology being used to provide
broadband services.
Eight types of access technology considered currently: Cable Modems, DSL,
FTTB/VDSL, FTTB/LAN, FTTH, WiFi, WLL, satellite and Other. Other is primarily
broadband leased lines like T1/E1 lines, but could include higher rate PDH and
SDH lines. This tool is not meant to cover all the corporate access techniques.
f) Retail/Wholesale: the type of subscriber
Many service providers wholesale access lines for resale by other ISPs and
service providers. A wholesale subscriber is one the service provider does not
have a direct relationship with. It is necessary to separate wholesale from
retail subscribers just to avoid double counting of subscribers. However, the
wholesaler is the service provider who would buy and install access equipment.
g) Unbundled LOOPs (ULL): the type of access
The owner of the LOOP may unbundle it and rent it to another service provider
who will provide services over the LOOP. The owner of the loop has its
unbundled LOOPs listed under its "Wholesale" category. The renter of the LOOP
has its unbundled LOOPs listed under its retail category. therefore by
choosing Retail or Wholesale it is possible to gain a view of who the progress
and effect of Unbundled LOOP.
h) 2G & 2.5G Mobile Subscribers: the number of subscribers to 2G and 2.5G services. 3G subscribers are excluded.
i) 3G Subscribers: the number of subscribers to 3G Mobile Services
j) Basic Cable TV Subscribers: the number of subscribers to basic Cable TV services
k) IPTV Subscribers: the number of subscribers to IPTV services
l) TV Homes Passed: the number of homes that the service provider could provide Cable TV service to.
m) 2- Way TV Homes Passed: the number of homes that could get high-speed Internet .
n)Fiber Homes Passed: the number of homes that could get FTTH.
