Abstract

Discretes represent easily the largest semiconductor product segment by unit volume. Numerous discrete devices are found across all products in all application markets, and although innovation happens at a much slower pace here, these markets are typically more stable than other product areas.

Some minor advances include the suppliers' focus on optimizing energy efficiency in new chip, package, and system designs. Increasingly, the consumer electronics companies are acknowledging that power consumption is critical, and as a result, companies are making a major effort to address tight power budgets and significantly reduce power consumption in order to improve battery life in portable devices.

Toshiba has led this market for many years, and while this continued into 2009, the company lost considerable share against its next closest rival, STMicroelectronics. These OEMs, along with other top players, are primarily focused on power transistors, which are in high demand among discretes, for use in the latest power management solutions.

The discretes market will account for $18.4 billion in global 2010 revenue or roughly 6 percent of the overall $292 billion semiconductor industry. While this is one of the smaller categories in terms of revenue, unit shipments of these devices far outweigh other integrated circuit categories, as discretes are found in almost every electronics application design. This product category includes diodes, small signal transistors, power transistors, rectifiers, thyristors, and other miscellaneous discretes.
