Abstract
Despite declines across all major segments during the recession, the
semiconductor industry as a whole is expected to rebound in 2010 and beyond,
growing as customers and businesses alike begin the replacement cycle anew.
Databeans projects that the entire semiconductor market revenue will grow 24
percent from 2009 to 2010.
The semiconductor industry continues to play a major role in worldwide
economies, especially in developing regions. Increasingly, chip manufacturing
is moving to Asia Pacific countries. China, in particular, is expected to
remain the largest and most important region here thanks to its rapidly
growing consumer class and green energy initiatives. In recent years, upstarts
in the country have moved from low-end assembly and manufacturing towards
making more advanced technology products.
Some believe that the technology industry now potentially faces a growing
shortage of semiconductors and other high-tech components following a failure
to invest in new manufacturing facilities during the recession. Many companies
waited until the start of 2010, when many regional markets had emerged from
recession, to begin to ramp up production. As a result, most firms will not
reap the benefits of rapidly returning demand until 2011 or later.
Databeans projects that the worldwide semiconductor market will reach $280.26
billion in global sales in 2010. Total global unit shipments are slated reach
666.33 billion in 2010. Average Selling Prices (ASPs) across the entire
industry are projected to drop slightly from $0.43 in 2009 to $0.42 in 2010.
