Abstract
The consumer electronics industry witnessed a major decline in 2009 as the
economic recession caused buyers to hold off on luxury entertainment
purchases. However, 2010 promises to provide several new technologies in the
video game, television entertainment, and audio segments that will bring in
new customers. Hot technologies include motion-tracking game controllers,
social networking enabled televisions, 3D televisions, e-book readers, and
more. As consumers look to replace older technology heading out of the
recession, these features will be key differentiators.
Audio power amplifiers are divided into two distinct categories: Class AB and
Class D. Combined they will account for nearly $1 billion in 2010 global
revenue, making them the most important segment of the $3 billion special
purpose consumer analog market. Other noteworthy special purpose consumer
analog product categories include AFEs (analog front ends), which are utilized
for input signals and will reach a projected total of $342 million in 2010.
Video Amplifiers will account for another $192 million in projected revenue.
Finally, motor control ICs that are needed to control the various moving parts
in consumer devices and other assorted special purpose analog ICs make up the
remaining $726 million in expected 2010 revenue.
Power amplifier circuits can be classified as A, B, AB and C for analog
designs, and class D and E for switching designs based upon their conduction
angle. Today, class AB and class D designs are dominant classes used to power
audio applications. Linear Class AB amplifiers are still found in the majority
of audio applications and represent over three fourths of the total audio
power amplifier revenue, with major markets including home stereo and other
multimedia CE products. Databeans expects this market to reach $647 million in
