LEDs make up the majority of the optoelectronics market and will continue to
rapidly outpace the rest of the market, thanks consumption in a variety of new
applications and manufacturing techniques which are quickly driving down
selling prices.
In 2010 Optoelectronics will represent the fifth largest semiconductor market
in worldwide sales with $20.6 billion in projected total revenue. Over the
next five years this segment will experience the fastest growth of any IC
segment with revenue CAGR at 12 percent and unit shipments CAGR at 18 percent
projected over the forecasted period.
The main growth potential in this market lies primarily from energy efficient
LEDs and OLEDs that are now often used for backlighting electronics displays
in many high volume consumer, computer, and communications markets. What' s
more, many of these lamps are reaching the point where they can be used for
commercial and residential lighting. Databeans expects that LEDs will see
average growth rates of 20 percent annually, reaching $17.4 billion by 2015.
