Abstract

As a result of the increasing demand for healthcare worldwide, medical electronics represents the fastest growing industrial semiconductor opportunity for suppliers, with the Home, Clinical, and Imaging end-equipment segments all requiring improved components with advanced performance characteristics, smaller sized packaging, and lower power consumption, with the ability to meet both governmental and consumer desired specifications.

Medical electronics continues to be a fast changing market. Currently, the major themes in play include the trend toward portable medical devices and equipment for home use, the need to better manage the new forms of patient data and medical records, the need to develop higher performance characteristics for wireless medical devices, and the need to satisfy the increased demand for healthcare that will come as a result of new legislation in the Americas and in Europe and the aging or newer populations of Japan and the Asia Pacific region.

The medical electronics market is estimated to be valued at $128.6 billion for this year, and it is expected to reach a market size of about $191.1 billion by 2015, resulting in a growth rate of 8 percent over the next five years.
