Abstract
2010 was a classic illustration of sustained growth, innovation, and
execution. The Semiconductor Industry rebounded with double digit growth in
volume and $Revenues resulting from the combined growth across all market
segments - Consumer, Computing, Communications, and Industrial, all
demonstrated growth throughout the calendar year in 2010.
Driven by the proliferation of new gadgets ranging from; SmartPhones to Smart
Appliances, and thru to the wave of new tablets, pads, and slates moving into
the market with explosive growth, this trend will continue well into the New
year. In tablets/Pads/Slates, Apple continues to lead the pack with its iPad,
but a plethora of competitors are in hot pursuit - The Galaxy Tablet from
Samsung, HP' s Slate500, Motorola, and many more, all demonstrated at the
recent CES in January..
In Consumer, 2010 saw HDTV continue to evolve with lower price points,
especially in the LCD based models, and 3D is fast becoming much more viable
as the technology evolves. All of this combined to result in explosive growth
through the year yielding backlog coming into Q1 resulting from a very good
Q42010 - the holiday season proved to be an issue with very good sales,
inventories sold out, backlog into Q1, but limited inventories of Key items
like Quartz Crystals and Oscillators, as well as some key Semiconductor Clock
and Timing devices due to long lead times resulting from back end capacity
issues (packages and test/assembly). The good news is in the myriad of new
applications and suppliers to consume the timing products as well as
stability, although limited for now, in $ASP for these timing solutions.
Coming into the middle of the first quarter of 2011, we find ourselves with
low inventories, raw material shortages, packaging lead times extended, and
new folks entering with their disruptive technologies, to make the challenge
even greater...
Q1 came in full of cautious optimism, but yielded continued growth from the
last half of 2009. New products in consumer, especially in SmartPhones, HDTV,
DVR (Blu-Ray) - In Computing, 2010 brought the rapid decline of the netbook
and the onset of the pad / slate / tablet as well as new more powerful
laptops, some with 3D, extended memory with a upgraded more powerful CPU,
SSD' s in ever increasing densities (up to 64GB today).
In Communications, expanding the communications infrastructure and backhaul
(700MHz, 4G / LTE) to support the increased connectivity and vast amounts of
data moving resulting from all of this expanded “connectivity” -
not just SmartPhones, email, and video, but newly connected devices like TV' s,
Set Top Boxes, PC Audio, Kitchen Appliances, Security systems, and more...
By Q4 CY2010, the growth and recovery was truly validated as growth was
sustained and the forecasts from the big guys continues with optimism, but
adds caution coming into the new year; They expound limited single digit
growth expected in the ~5% range for 2011, and voice the continued Fear
Uncertainty and Doubt (The FUD Factor) that we have seen for the last couple
of years in our still challenged economies worldwide.
