Abstract

A recent survey covering 1,210 respondents in 6 countries, including Australia, China, India, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea, was conducted by In-Stat to understand the interest levels, and current use of, broadband Internet connections, home networks, various digital home client devices, and home network applications of Asia/Pacific consumers.

The adoption patterns and perceptions of early adopters in the digital home market, to a large extent, indicate the customers' preferences and spending willingness, and thus the future potential of the market.

Some of the key findings included:

  • 81.7% of the respondents have broadband connections at home. The homes with broadband, but especially those with a home network are believed to be the main potential customers for digital home devices/services.
  • 40.2% or 487 homes have network routers for their home network while 39.0% or 472 non-current home networking router users intend to purchase one for their homes. PC inter-connection, broadband sharing, and printer sharing are the top three tasks running on current/planned home networks.
  • Home automation systems have been adopted by only 14.4% or 174 homes among the 1,210 respondents. There are not many products available in the market. However, 46.5% or 563 respondents are interested in such systems and 352 of them have a budget ranging between US$200 and US$1,000 for the purchase.
