Phosphate is crucial to human beings because of its feature of being non-renewable and the great importance of phosphate fertilizer in agricultural production. Thus, phosphorus resources are attracting more and more attention in the world. In order to protect phosphorus resources, some countries in the world have restricted the production and export of yellow phosphorus. Still, some countries are encouraging the production and export of the product, some even inviting foreigners to explore their domestic phosphorus resources.

Though the production of yellow phosphorus faces overcapacity in the world at present, it's still uneasy for end users to obtain it. It's more interesting that it's difficult for some countries to get yellow phosphorus while some other are involved in anti-dumping cased for the product. Then how is the global yellow phosphorus industry currently going on earth?

The global consumption of yellow phosphorus is distributed in the major production countries and major importers. Thermal phosphoric acid still takes the largest share in the global total consumption of yellow phosphorus, while phosphorus trichloride is playing a more and more important role. What have happened in the past few years?

This report answers more than this. What are the differences between major players in the world? How will the future scenario be in the world and in different countries? Executive summary:

The global yellow phosphorus production is highly concentrated and resource-dependent, largely subject to the distribution of phosphorus ore and electricity. Thus, those producers who don't have their own phosphorus resources will be less competitive, and that's why production of yellow phosphorus has been largely transferred to the countries holding phosphorus resources in the past few years.

In 2013, about XXX% of phosphorus ore was used to produce phosphate fertilizer and only around XXX% was used to produce yellow phosphorus globally. As a high energy-consumption industry, the price of yellow phosphorus is influenced by electricity price. Among various factors influencing the price of yellow phosphorus, the impact from electricity price accounts for as high as 50%-60%, while the price of phosphorus ore has little effect.

- Production and supply

In 2013, global yellow phosphorus capacity was concentrated in four countries, namely, China, the US, Kazakhstan and Vietnam. Each of them has different characteristics in their yellow phosphorus industry. Production technology for yellow phosphorus is generally the same in the world-the electric furnace process. In recent years, wet-process phosphorus acid has drawn more and more attention because of its low cost, which requires higher-grade phosphorus ore and advanced purification technique. With the continuous development of wet-process phosphoric acid, it is estimated that the output of yellow phosphorus, not needed for producing wet-process phosphoric acid, will drop slightly in the coming several years.

China

With sufficient supply of phosphorus ore resources and electric power, China is superior in producing yellow phosphorus. The total capacity of yellow phosphorus in China reached XXX t/a in 2013 and its output has been over XXX tonnes since 2009. Most of the output is retained for domestic use, especially the downstream industries which have developed so fast in recent years. Besides, in order to optimize its domestic phosphorus chemical industries, the Chinese government has gradually restricted the export of yellow phosphorus by raising the export tariff.

The US

The US is the third largest producer of yellow phosphorus worldwide in 2013, with a capacity of XXX t/a, and its exported a small quantity of its output to Brazil in which the US-based Monsanto's subsidiary is located. The US government has also restricted the domestic production and export of yellow phosphorus. Now, Monsanto is the only active producer in the country.

Kazakhstan

As the second largest producer and the largest exporter of yellow phosphorus worldwide in 2013, Kazakhstan's yellow phosphorus industry develops rapidly. With self-supplied phosphorus ore and electric power, Kazphosphate LLC is monopolizing the production of yellow phosphorus and its derivatives in the country.

Vietnam

Vietnam has largely developed its yellow phosphorus industry and increased its export in the past few years, but its capacity is still not large enough to impact the global supply structure.

- Consumption

The global demand for yellow phosphorus comes from five main downstream products: phosphoric acid, phosphorus trichloride, phosphorus pentoxide, phosphorus pentasulfide and sodium hypophosphite; about XXX of the total consumption of yellow phosphorus in 2013 was used for producing phosphoric acid.

In 2013, thermal phosphoric acid and phosphorus trichloride were the top two consumption fields of yellow phosphorus, accounting for XXX and XXX of its global total consumption, respectively.

China, the US, Kazakhstan and Poland are the major consumption countries, with consumption share of about XXX, XXX, XXX and XXX in 2013, respectively.

- Analysis of competitiveness among four major production countries

Based on the Michael Porter diamond model, CCM made a brief analysis of major suppliers of yellow phosphorus in the world. The conclusions are as follows.

Kazakhstan and Vietnam seem to be more competitive than the other two countries in yellow phosphorus production. Both of them will play an increasingly important role, even surpassing China and the US, in global supply in the future.

A large quantity of the US' phosphorus ore is used to produce high-analysis fertilizers and feed additives, and the US doesn't pay much attention to its yellow phosphorus industry.

With the Chinese government's goal to reduce power consumption in production of yellow phosphorus and increase the product's added value, China's yellow phosphorus industry is witnessing a focus shift from merely production of yellow phosphorus to post-processing of the product in the future.
