Abstract
Introduction
Description:
Although China's vegetable seed industry has witnessed huge development in the
past years, the treated vegetable seed accounts for less than 10% of the total
vegetable seed consumed in China. However, the demand for vegetable seed
treatment is expected to be strong in the future.
CCM International has carried out an unique study, namely " Seed Treatment for
Vegetable Seed in China" and has tried to screen out supply/demand for 7
vegetable seeds (tomato, carrot, spinach, onion, pepper, lettuce, watermelon),
seed treatment products and seed treatment technologies in China, aiming at
the forecast on the future development and commercial opportunities of seed
treatment in China's vegetable industry.
The data from various channels (desk research, telephone interview, site
visit, etc. ) have been combined to make this report as precise and scientific
as possible. Throughout the process, a series of internal discussions have
been held in order to analyze the data and draw conclusions.
Through this report, you can:
- Get vegetable planting situation and information about the vegetable seed
market
- Get information about key players in vegetable seed industry
- Get governmental polices and regulations relevant to vegetable seed
treatment
- Get general information of vegetable seed treatment in China
- Get clearly about the seed treatment situation of each vegetable (tomato,
lettuce, etc.)
- Understand key end-users' (vegetable seed companies or processing
companies) current usage and attitude
- Get the information of vegetable industrial seedling, vegetable seed
production, export, etc., and their demand for seed treatment
- Get a clear idea about key vegetable seed players' profile
- Find out the existing and potential commercial opportunities
Executive summary:
Vegetable production is very important to China which has a huge population to
feed. China is the largest vegetable producer in the world at present. In
2010, vegetable planting area in China increased to XX million ha., up XX%
compared with that of the last year. It is estimated that the growth of
vegetable planting area will slow down compared with that of the past years.
However, greenhouse vegetable in China has witnessed impressive development in
the past decades. China's area of vegetable planted in greenhouse was less
than XXX ha. in 1980, but it hits XXXmillion ha. in 2010. Currently, China is
the biggest greenhouse vegetable producer in the world.
Because of its large vegetable planting area, China is the biggest vegetable
seed market globally. The market value of vegetable seed ranks the second
among all domestic seed industries. China consumes over XXX tonnes of
vegetable seed every year, valued from USDXXX billion to USD1.90 billion at
present.
The scale of domestic vegetable seed companies is very small at present. Among
the top XX domestic seed companies, none is majorly engaged in vegetable seed
business and they do not have productive vegetable seed R&D. Contrarily, over
XX% of domestic vegetable varieties are developed by research institutes or
universities. The huge vegetable seed market attracts many oversea investors.
At present, there are over XX overseas seed companies in China, most of whom
are engaged in vegetable seed business. Different from domestic companies,
overseas vegetable seed companies have strong R&D capabilities. Therefore,
they have introduced plenty of high-quality vegetable varieties into China,
successfully capturing most of the market share in major vegetable production
regions.
Although China's vegetable seed industry has witnessed huge development in the
past years, the development of vegetable seed treatment is slow in China. The
treated vegetable seed accounts for less than XX% of the total vegetable seed
consumed in China. Domestic market of vegetable seed treatment has the
following characteristics:
- The seed treatment rate of vegetable seed is very low at present and the
major method applied by domestic seed companies is film-coating. Pelleting and
encrusting are in the promotion stage and both are seldom used.
- Seed treatment rate of imported vegetable seed is much higher than that of
domestic vegetable seed. Most of the imported vegetable seeds are film-coated
before they are imported.
- Some domestic seed companies exaggerate the function of seed treatment.
- Film-coated seeds are thought to be high-grade seeds by farmers. However,
advantages of vegetable seed treatment are not fully recognized. Some farmers
still soak the film-coated seed before sowing.
- Some domestic film-coating agents only beautify the seed without any
practical functionality, as exposed by some insiders. The poor quality of
domestic-made film-coating agents impacts on the germination percentage of
vegetable seed.
However, it is expected that vegetable seed treatment will develop quickly in
the future, which can bring many business opportunities to Chinese vegetable
seed treatment industry. The driving factors include the follows:
- Supply increase of treated vegetable seeds;
- Development of new seed treatment method;
- Breakout of soil-borne diseases;
- Development of mechanical sowing and industrial seedling;
- Industry integration of vegetable seed companies.
