Abstract
The Indian Man-Made Fibre Industry..........global ease to steer growth
The Indian Textile Industry is one of the most important and integrated
industries in the Indian economy providing employment to about 35 mn people
directly and 50 mn people indirectly. The market size is estimated at US$ 55
bn and accounts for 14% of industrial production and 18% of industrial
employment. The industry also contributes 17% to gross export earnings and 4%
to national GDP.
The textile industry can be segmented into Natural fibres and Man-Made Fibres
(MMFs) based on use of basic raw material, cotton or crude derivate,
respectively. Due to tropical climate, cotton is considered as preferred
choice over MMF. Even though, cotton is the dominantly consumed fibre in India
the share of cotton in total fibre consumption has shown a decline over the
years. It has declined from 74% in FY91 to 59% in FY09.
Among the various MMF products in synthetic and cellulosic segments like
polyester, olefin, nylon, acrylics, viscose etc polyester is the most consumed
fibre. It accounts for about 80% of the MMF demand. The widening price
differential between cotton and polyester and growth in use of non cotton
fabrics are driving the demand for polyester in India. In the last ten years,
the production of 100% non cotton spun yarn grew at a CAGR of 5.6% while the
production of 100% cotton spun yarn grew at 3.1%.
Globally, Man-Made Fibres (MMF) is the most dominant fibre with the share of
63% (in CY2008) in the total fibre consumption. Over the years, Natural fibre
has lost its market share to MMF, mainly on account of the unsteadiness in the
availability of cotton (which forms almost 95% of the total consumption of
natural fibre) and growing popularity of the polyester. The share of natural
fibres in the total fibre consumption declined from 58% in CY1975 to 37% in
CY2008, while that of MMF has expanded rapidly from 42% to 63% during the same
period.
China is the largest producer and consumer of the MMF across the globe. It
accounted for about 54% of the total MMF consumed across the globe during
CY2008. The consumption of MMF in the country was dominated by the synthetic
fibres. It accounted for almost 95% of the total MMF consumed by the Chinese
textile mills in CY2008.
CARE Research expects that going forward the improved macro economic
conditions, growing population, widening price differential between cotton and
polyester and growing demand for non cotton fabrics will steer the growth of
MMF industry. Additionally, the growth will also be driven by newer
applications of MMF in home textiles, technical textiles, accessories etc.
