Market Overview

Generally speaking, the market for mechanical ventilation products has grown across Europe over the past decade, although the global economic crisis did have a significant impact on market development since ventilation is a typical new build product. Historically, legislation was a key driver of uptake in both the residential and non-residential segments. As national and EU legislation led levels of insulation in new buildings to increase, a higher level of ventilation was also required to prevent indoor air quality from suffering and moisture problems from occurring. As legislation was a key ventilation market driver, countries that made ventilation products mandatory in new build at an early stage have mature residential markets.

The ventilation only market includes the more mature ventilation products such as unitary fans, roof fans and central extract/supply systems. Due to their relatively low efficiency compared to heat recovery units they are becoming increasingly unpopular particularly in new housing, although their low price and ease of installation means they are still by far the most commonly sold ventilation system within the renovation segment. The market is expected to experience some growth over the forecast period due to improving macroeconomic conditions, but in the long term a sales decline is expected due to competition from higher efficiency products.

The heat recovery market has seen one of the highest growths within the ventilation sector over the last decade, becoming the most popular ventilation system in new dwellings. Local heat recovery, in particular, has become a popular substitute for single zone systems such as unitary fans, and has even become competitive in new housing due to their cheap price when installing three or more systems to provide ventilation to an entire dwelling. Germany is by far the largest market for LHRV systems, but many other European countries are expecting significant growth (albeit from low numbers) during the forecast period. The LHRV market has experienced a dramatic shift away from traditional axial fans towards push-pull fans, which have an alternating airflow designed to be more efficient. So far the trend is mainly seen in Germany but is growing in most other LHRV country markets.

The air handling market has been predominantly characterised by a growing shift towards systems with heat recovery, either through legislation banning low efficiency systems, or simply due to consumer demand for higher efficiency in buildings. Among the highest growths during the forecast is expected to be in Sweden, due to high construction and renovation in the non-housing sector. Higher airflow models have also gained in popularity over the last three years, as competition has increased from commercial central heat recovery in installations requiring below 1,000m2/h.
