BMI View: Asia hosts a broad mix of developed, developing and emerging telecoms markets, all of which are at very different stages of development and which require different investment strategies. For operators and service providers, the region's principle challenge is low consumer spending power. Premium 3G and 4G mobile broadband services quickly succumbed to price competition wrought by new entrants and it seems likely that 5G will follow suit unless new business models emerge over the next two to three years. The comparative lack of high-capacity wireline infrastructure enables mobile to flourish, driving the market's development. However, fibre deployment is picking up and, in the most affluent markets, will represent a viable alternative to mobile where young consumers have come to expect high quality multimedia services. Nevertheless, pricing strategies will be highly competitive and will not be conducive to profit growth and return on investment.
