BMI View: Over our five-year forecast period to 2021, North African economies will remain largely underdeveloped in comparison to the wider MENA region, more particularly to the Gulf States. This will translate into different medium-term trends; GCC markets as well as Israel will see rising demand for convenience and online retailing, while the health consciousness trend, also encouraged by governments across the region, will also remain at play. On the other hand, consumer preferences across North Africa will be much less dynamic, with households mostly shifting towards more purchases of packaged food and only gaining access to organised food retail, which is still in its infancy.

Latest Updates And Industry Developments:

  • The introduction of tax on sugary and energy drinks in several GCC countries since the start of 2017 will encourage consumers to shift towards mineral waters andother healthier alternatives at the expense of sugary drinks, but the impact will be modest amid elevated purchasing power across the Gulf.
