BMI View: We hold a positive view on the 2016 outlook across the region, particularly after a slowdown in 2015. This is due to its increasingly favourable consumer market over our forecast period, on the back of rising urbanisation, growing disposable incomes, a youthful population as well as large expatriate population - which will be among the key growth drivers for international brands. Premiumisation will remain an important trend across the more developed GCC markets, while there remain opportunities in less developed countries for food retail formalisation.

Key Trends & Industry Developments

  • We highlight Iran, Saudi Arabia and Egypt as the highest food spending economies in MENA, primarily owing to their large population sizes, with strong opportunities for mass grocery retailers in these markets.
