BMI View:Over our five-year forecast period to 2021, North African economies will remain largely underdeveloped in comparison to the wider MENA region, more particularly to the Gulf States. The consumption of food and non-alcoholic drinks will be largely muted by the prevalence of the informal sector, which accounts for large unrecorded consumption levels. Higher income levels as well as the dominant urban population will drive the rapid adoption of western trends across the GCC and wealthier markets such as Israel.

Latest Updates And Industry Developments

  • The introduction of a value added tax (VAT) in 2018 will only have a short-term negative impact on consumers, with long-term trends still positive as the GCC region recovers in line with higher oil prices.
  • Egypt's move to a free-floating currency combined with a reduction in subsidies on food, implementation of a VAT as well as escalating price inflation has damaged consumer purchasing power and does not look to recover to 2016 levels during our forecast period to 2021.
