BMI View: Global construction growth will remain robust in 2017, after weak emerging market performance dragged down the overall industry in 2014 and 2015.

Several factors are driving our growth outlook:

  • Globally, commodity prices have stabilised and in some cases are making a nascent recovery.
  • We expect sustained strong growth in Chinese real construction industry value at 7% in 2017.
  • Additionally, other BRICs are improving versus 2015, although Russia and Brazil will see only a weak recovery.
  • We have seen a policy shift in major developed and emerging markets indicating a move towards fiscal expansion and away from austerity with a wave of new infrastructure stimulus plans supporting our expectation that construction growth will accelerate.
