BMI View:The global construction sector will expand in 2017 and 2018 supported by a gradual recovery in commodity prices, growing availability of public and private capital and improved confidence in the global economy. Progress in the project pipeline following several years of stagnation is indicative of construction activity increasing.

Several factors are driving our growth outlook:

  • The global construction industry will see growth accelerate in 2017 and 2018, driven by a combination of rising public and private financing for infrastructure. A combination of stimulus and other government investment platforms, a gradual rise in commodity prices and an increase in private capital for financing infrastructure is supporting this expansion.
  • Developed countries will see growth remain elevated compared to trend, but stable. Comparatively, emerging markets will see growth accelerate, supported primarily by a recovery in commodity prices, but also by growing availability of capital for infrastructure investment. In particular, expansion of private financing mechanisms, such as PPPs, and the growing availability of mutli-lateral and bi-lateral capital (such as the AIIB and China and Japan's infrastructure export drives) are supporting an increase in financing for emerging market infrastructure.
  • The value of projects under construction globally has increased by USD300bn in April 2017 compared to the same point in 2016, supporting our expectation for growth to accelerate in 2017. This is indicative of projects moving through the pipeline as funding becomes available. As a further sign of progress, we have seen 50% y-o-y expansion in the value of projects currently in the tender phase.
