BMI View:We see improved prospects in Thailand's construction industry, with the current government's focus on infrastructure development leading to elevated levels of investment especially in the transport sector. Over the next 10 years, Thailand's construction industry is forecast to grow at faster rates than the past decade, especially as we expect the pro-infrastructure junta government to retain influence beyond the upcoming elections.

Forecast & Industry Developments

  • We have further upgraded our outlook for Thailand's construction industry, and now expect growth in 2017 to reach 6.0% in real terms. Between 2017 and 2026, growth will average 4.7% annually. This comes on the back of strong FY2016 growth and promising progress on major infrastructure projects in the country.
  • The transport sector will continue to drive growth in Thailand's infrastructure industry, with the government in the midst of implementing USD40bn worth of projects over the next five to 10 years. The majority of projects involve upgrading and expanding the country's long-distance and urban rail networks.
  • Improved transport networks will bolster Thailand's role as a tourism hub, supporting greater investments in commercial and residential real estate. China will be a major source of both tourists and investment in the tourism industry.
  • Persistent operating risks continue to cause delays in Thailand's infrastructure projects, with only 2% of the planned USD40bn outlay spent as of March 2017. However, we expect that projects will move forward more quickly in the coming years as initial bureaucratic and financial burdens are resolved.
