BMI View: Growth in Malaysia's construction sector is set to moderate over the coming years, decelerating

from an estimated 10.7% in 2015 to 7.8% in 2016 and 6.6% in 2017. Transport will remain the bright spot,

driving overall growth, while upside risks are returning to residential and non-residential construction.

Forecast & Industry Developments

  • Growth in Malaysia's construction sector will continue to moderate over the coming years, decelerating

from an estimated 10.7% in 2015 to 7.8% in 2016 and 6.6% in 2017. The transport segment will

outperform, driving overall growth.

  • While the 2017 budget allocation to infrastructure and construction of at least MYR46bn (USD10.8bn) is

a y-o-y decrease, it remains expansionary and will support construction sector growth.

  • We forecast the transport sector to grow 9.2 % in 2017 and at an annual average of 7.9% over our fiveyear

forecast period. The growth will moderate over the coming decade, averaging 7.3% per annum

between 2016 and 2025. The railways sector is forecast to outperform, averaging 8.3% growth per annum

between 2017 and 2021, supported by a large project pipeline. Growth in the roads and bridges sector

will also remain strong, averaging 8.0% between 2017 and 2021.

  • Upside risks for non-residential building are growing momentum. China's stabilising economy will drive

exports, while improving commodity prices should also be supportive of gross fixed capital formation.
