BMI View: India's construction industry will expand steadily over our 10-year forecast period, buoyed by the government's business-friendly policies and sizable infrastructure investment programmes. We also expect the risky project environment, which has seen the majority of construction projects fall behind schedule, to gradually improve over the next five years.

Forecast & Industry Developments

  • The construction industry will grow by 5.6% in real terms in 2017 and average 6.2% annually through 2026. An improving business environment and rising government spending will drive investment into the country's construction and infrastructure industries.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has initiated a number of programs we believe will guide industry investments over the next five years, including: 'Make in India' to encourage foreign-direct investment; the 100 Smart Cities plan to upgrade urban infrastructure; Industrial Corridors to improve links between manufacturing and trading hubs; and the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation to develop low-cost housing.
  • We expect the business and project risk environment to gradually improve over the next five years, thereby helping reduce the length and frequency of construction delays. Efforts to streamline the landacquisition process are being undertaken by state governments, even after Modi's effort to introduce reforms on a national level were rejected by Parliament in 2015.
