Abstract
This new report assesses the development of data centres in the five economies
of Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. Research has
concluded at a point when the world economy is experiencing a significant
downturn. Although the outlook in the macro environment in which data centres
operate has now substantially altered, there is still some reason to suggest
that demand will be sustained in the medium term as enterprises accelerate the
migration of IT to third parties - in part driven by the urgency of the need
to reduce cost.
Singapore remains the nexus of data centre activity in the South East Asian
region, and represents some 48% of all facilities included in this report.
Sheltered against extreme weather conditions and earthquakes, a well developed
communications infrastructure with extensive international connectivity and,
by 2012, island-wide wholesale dark fibre services, and robust governance, the
country has been a destination of choice for locating IT hubs by multinational
firms. The report suggests these advantages will be sustained particularly
with the possible new development of data centre parks, specific locations for
data centres with shared power and physical infrastructure.
All countries covered in the report have been assessed to provide detailed
information on floor space and utilisation, as well as consideration of the
environments in which they operate economically, and degree of change to
accommodate environmental requirements contained in RFPs from international
companies entering these markets. Research for this report suggests that data
centre owners in these markets perceive Green as a cost (to be passed on to
the customer if insisted upon) but pressures for upgrade and greening will
nevertheless persist, particularly in Singapore.
Interviewees from Singapore (and elsewhere) continue (since the previous
study) to perceive the key competitor in international data centre markets as
Hong Kong. Yet a wider perspective of competitive rivalry is probably
required. Although Singapore has a 40% lead in terms of Space, Malaysia is
moving more quickly to play catch up and it is evident that larger scale
facilities are clustering in Kuala Lumpur. Six of the top ten Data Centre
players in South East Asia by Space are based in Malaysia. Australia/New
Zealand will represent tougher competition in terms pricing over the next two
years for Singapore. India too (with the new India-UK Cable) might pose more
of a medium term threat.
The report looks at all the issues impacting growth, market drivers, power,
espousal of green, data centre investments, player strategies and presents
data covering floor space across each country. Factors too such as the impact
of consolidation in the hosting sector, IT Outsourcing by enterprises, the
emerging development of Cloud Computing services, selective investment by
property interests collectively represent the rigours of market survival and
competitiveness that will likely be endured across the region, as well as
potential opportunities that can be harnessed by those with the resources and
competencies to do so.
Although new projects and investment will be hindered by the global downturn,
many of the data centres included in the report nevertheless appear to be
positioned to weather difficult trading conditions over the next twenty four
months and emerge as important players in the next wave of digital growth.
The report forecasts an increase of 68% in capacity by 2013 across the five
country markets.
