REPORT SCOPE

INTRODUCTION

REASONS FOR DOING THE STUDY

The objective of this study is to provide an in-depth analysis and forecast of the global arthroscopy market. The focus is on products and procedures currently used or under development for large- and small-joint arthroscopy, including techniques, therapies, and products.

The global market for arthroscopic devices was estimated at $2.8 billion in 2010, with high single-digit growth estimated through 2015. Different segments such as shoulder and spine surgery are projected to grow at a faster rate than arthroscopic knee and hip surgery. Although the U.S. holds between 45% and 55% of the market, the fastest growing regions for arthroscopic surgery are Europe and China.

STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

Arthroscopy is a minimally-invasive surgical technique that employs an arthroscope (i.e., a small fiber optic camera) inserted through a small incision, along with other surgical instruments inserted through one to three other portals, to repair soft tissue damage. The majority of procedures are performed to repair knee damage, most notably to the meniscus, but surgeons continue to develop and refine various arthroscopic procedures, including:

  • Shaving bone tissue to remove calcium deposits or bone spurs
  • Repairing or trimming soft tissues in joints such as ligaments, tendons, and cartilage
  • Removing scar tissue or inflamed areas of the synovium
  • Repairing severe joint problems

Arthroscopy can be performed on virtually any joint in the body, making it an extremely valuable tool for treating sports injuries such as meniscus tears and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) or posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) damage, as well as age-related damage from rheumatoid arthritis. With the aging of the global population, minimally invasive techniques will be especially valuable because they do not typically require extended hospitalization. They also have shorter recuperation times, making them more tolerable and convenient for patients.

This report is designed to investigate the arthroscopy market by both products and procedures, with supporting tables and figures to illustrate projected growth. The report will include market estimates for the U.S., Europe, Japan, and other emerging countries.

SCOPE OF REPORT

This report offers forecasts by product segment from 2010 through 2015, including supporting analyses for projections.

It quantifies the human arthroscopy market only and does not include the veterinary arthroscopy market. The report does not include ancillary products such as gowns, gloves, and drapes, as their quantification solely for arthroscopic use cannot be calculated.

This report is a valuable tool for anyone assessing the arthroscopy market and attempting to devise a strategy to successfully compete within it. This report provides a thorough background on the structure of the arthroscopy market and the chief challenges and opportunities it faces. It offers the information needed to understand the current market and to address the emerging one.

This is an invaluable tool for business planners, acquisitions specialists, licensing strategists, product managers, market research analysts, investing consultants, and others interested in the arthroscopy market, its products, its participants, and its future.

METHODOLOGIES AND INFORMATION SOURCES

Information for this report was obtained from a variety of primary and secondary research sources, including industry analysts; annual reports and SEC reports; the American College of Surgeons; the American Association of Orthopedic Medicine; the American Association of Knee and Hip Surgeons; the International Society of Arthroscopy; U.S., European, and Japanese government agencies; and journal articles. Secondary sources include news articles, product literature, and press releases.

When precise information was unavailable, a consensus was made using reasonable assumptions and estimates based on historical data.
