INTRODUCTION

STUDY GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

BCC Research' s goal in conducting this study was to determine the current status of the global market for physical vapor deposition (PVD) equipment, materials deposited and services, as well as to assess the worldwide growth potential for this deposition technology over the period 2009 through 2014. We were particularly interested in the types of equipment and materials being used for consumer and industrial applications. We were equally interested in the status of the industry in relation to the global economic crisis and recession, and the impact these events had and will have on PVD demand.

Our major objective is to present a comprehensive analysis of the current PVD market and project its future.

REASONS FOR DOING THE STUDY

The PVD industry has expanded over the past several decades. More sophisticated manufacturing and fabrication techniques and smaller - sized products have broadened the demand for vapor - deposited materials. New and existing products require materials that can be delivered by vacuum deposition of films on a growing variety of substrates.

This report examines the current position of PVD technologies and materials in eight major industries with a focus on what materials and types of PVD systems are being used to meet the demands for more sophisticated products. We also analyzed the decline in PVD demand for particular industries caused by the economic downturn.

INTENDED AUDIENCE

This report provides an overview of deposition technologies and future trends, along with a global industry structure, including leading manufacturers of equipment and service providers. Within each industry, there is an overview of key applications, the advantages of using PVD, an analysis of market factors that will impact demand, shipments for 2009 and estimated shipments for 2014.

This study will be of interest to those in the microelectronics business, manufacturers of cutting tools, specialty packagers, makers of storage equipment and media, companies in the solar energy business, manufacturers of automotive and aerospace parts, medical device makers, and those in the optics industry. It will also be of interest to companies engaged in the manufacture of deposition equipment and materials and to surface coaters.

SCOPE OF REPORT

This study encompasses PVD technologies and materials in terms of application, properties and processes. BCC Research analyzes the major types of PVD systems and materials used to manufacture products in eight key industries. Applications are discussed, as are properties imparted by PVD. Trends in demand also are reviewed and their impacts on PVD are assessed.

Market drivers within each industry are identified. Materials deposited by PVD are analyzed according to basic functions (e.g. wear resistance, abrasion and corrosion resistance, conductivity and barrier protection). The value of PVD equipment shipments is projected within each industry by type of system. Material shipment values are projected, along with PVD service revenues. Technological issues and trends are reviewed, and other influential factors, such as economic conditions and standards, are discussed.

Because this is a global study, BCC Research analyzes domestic and international technological issues and economic considerations.

METHODOLOGY

BCC Research presents an analysis of the value of PVD systems, materials deposited, and services provided by type of system, material, and industry segment. Estimated value is what manufacturers and material providers have paid in current dollars. Then, based on our surveys, we analyze industry growth in relation to the growth of PVD technology, calculate estimates of growth, and forecast shipments for 2014.

INFORMATION SOURCES

BCC Research interviewed approximately 130 companies to obtain data for this report. Included were manufacturers of PVD equipment, material suppliers, deposition service providers, industrial and consumer product manufacturing companies, and various end users of products fabricated using the PVD process. Additional data were obtained from government information, trade associations, industry and financial sources, and an exhaustive review of technical literature.
