Spectrum reuse will drive the VoLTE business case for many mobile operators, but, for others, the benefits of virtualisation may mitigate the uncertainty about the commercial outlook for voice services.
Communication app providers such as LINE and Viber Media stand to benefit from the improved speed and low latency of LTE, yet most mobile network operators (MNOs) rely on legacy infrastructure for voice services. MNOs are hesitant to invest in a core upgrade to provide native VoLTE services because the outlook for voice revenue is poor.
We have built a heuristic model to highlight sensitivities in the VoLTE business case with viable solution options for three generic operator profiles.

Glen Ragoonanan (Principal Analyst) is the lead analyst for Analysys Mason's Infrastructure Solutions, Service Delivery Platforms and Software-Controlled Networking research programmes. Stephen Sale (Principal Analyst) is the lead analyst for Analysys Mason's Mobile Services and Next-Generation Services research programmes. His primary areas of specialisation include next-generation communication services, over-the-top (OTT) player strategies and mobile pricing. He also has extensive experience in analysing mobile operator strategies and forecasting mobile service markets. Before joining Analysys Mason in 2004, Stephen worked in the industry on areas that include VoIP, next-generation service architecture and broadband access. He has a degree in economics and an interdisciplinary MRes from the University of London.
