目錄

The most successful digital economy initiatives solve a concrete problem for consumers in the markets where they are deployed, and carefully consider the importance of context, whether social, technological or competitive.

Digital economy ‘readiness' is a function of how well operators can insulate themselves against the rapidly shifting competitive landscape in which threats not only come from competing telcos, but also from worldwide Internet giants and nimble start-ups. Mobile financial services and mobile health are the most widely addressed verticals by operators covered in our ‘Digital Economy Readiness Index’ (DERI), accounting for 47% of deployments. However, success in these areas varies widely, and the low average readiness scores for the initiatives surveyed indicates a need to adequately tailor each product to specific market conditions.

The DERI maps more than 340 digital economy initiatives by 32 of the largest operators worldwide, and provides a ‘readiness score' for the initiatives, in the following verticals:

  • mobile financial services
  • mobile health
  • mobile education
  • smart homes
  • mobile commerce and advertising
  • cloud-based services
  • mobile agriculture
  • mobile identity and security
  • venture capital funds and start-up accelerator programmes.

This Viewpoint:

  • highlights the top-level findings derived from the DERI's comprehensive dataset, and discusses digital economy trends, challenges and success factors
  • provides recommendations for operators wishing to maximise the impact from potential digital economy initiatives
  • analyses the geographical spread, scale and maturity of key digital economy verticals
  • qualifies and discusses the performance of worldwide initiatives in mobile health, mobile financial services, mobile education and smart homes
  • provides data from the DERI dataset, including:
    • average number of initiatives per operator, by vertical
    • average initiative readiness score, by vertical
    • percentage of initiatives targeted towards B2C, B2B and B2G customers.

DATA ANNEX

The DERI is included as part of the data annex to this report. It includes the details of more than 340 digital economy initiatives by 32 operators.

Each operator initiative receives a readiness score calculated across two distinct axes: its scale or type, and its maturity.
