Expectations around the role of 5G for enabling low-latency communications between vehicles (V2V) and between vehicles and roadside infractructure (V2I) are seen as an important driver for the accelerated deployment of 5G - URLL (Ultra Reliability Low Latency) from the middle of the next decade, coinciding with the emergence of fully-driverless vehicles that will depend on 5G for improved reliability through redundancy of safety-critical system components. In this respect, 5G-URLL could represent a complementary or even an alternative solution for 5.9 GHz IEEE 802.11p technologies. However, before this, 5G - EMBB (Enhanced Mobile BroadBand) will be deployed in vehicles for a range of other use cases, including high data rate multimedia streaming, vehicle life cycle management and virtual recalls through Over The Air updates, and vehicle sensor crowdsourcing for smart mobilty applications.

This report provides a detailed review of 5G technologies, automotive use cases and requirements, standardization efforts, main players, as well as subscription forecasts per type and region.
