As the Internet of Things creates a paradigm shift across various industries, cellular technology will play a significant role in the connecting the objects to the internet. This is already noticeable with its growing adoption in applications such as smart grids, telematics, automotive infotainment, smart waste bins and street lighting. To drive further penetration in the IoT market and compete with non-cellular technologies, cellular connectivity will need to further evolve to address specific requirements, especially those applications and services that are low bandwidth, cost sensitive, and battery powered.The goal of LTE-MTC is to develop a global, application agnostic wide area network technology to support the m2m and IoT market.
In this study emerging low power, low bandwidth and low cost variants of LTE such as LTE-CAT1, LTE-CAT0 and LTE-M are classified as LTE-Machine Type Communications (MTC). The report further explores the cellular technologies potential adoption in m2m and IoT applications that will be catered to by LTE- Machine Type Communication(MTC) technologies and assesses competitve environment in the Low Power WAN technologies.
