Downing College

Downing College is set amid 20 acres of lawn and trees in the very centre of Cambridge. It was founded in 1800 under the will of Sir George Downing. The College was originally designed by the highly respected Georgian architect, William Wilkins, who broke with the traditional theme of enclosed courts for a spacious campus with buildings set in a landscape. His unique neo-classical style was inspired by his travels in Greece. However, only part of Wilkins’ scheme was executed, comprising the West range and a majority of the East Range, built in 1807-1821. The rest of the buildings have since been completed by various architects.

The Hall

The Hall was designed by William Wilkins and built in 1818-1820. Externally it is constructed from Ketton Stone, a pale yellow and pink tinted limestone. Significant changes were made to the room in 1873 and 1967 and it was fully restored in 2008. The grand classical interior is adorned with columns and finishes that reflect the spirit of the Greek revival period. It has a new ceiling and floor in a bold and striking design in keeping with the original decorative scheme that was uncovered during initial investigative works.

The SCR & Fellows' Garden

The award-winning Senior Combination Room was designed by Professor W. G. Howell as a modern reinterpretation of the neo-classical style. It was built in 1969 and overlooks the Fellows' Garden.
