FTTH Services, Technologies, and Deployments

FTTH has been well accepted as a future-proof access solution. In the past few years, great progress has been made in FTTH technologies and deployment experiences. This workshop aims to share our progress, experiences, and lessons learned in FTTH services and applications, technologies, product development, FTTH deployment, network operation and maintenance, regulations, etc. The workshop will invite FTTH experts from service providers, government, equipment vendors, fiber and cable providers, and universities to discuss the following topics:

  • FTTH market status, analysis, and forecast
  • FTTH services and applications
  • FTTH networking technologies (i.e., EPON, GPON, WDM-PON, OCWDM-PON, PTP)
  • Low-cost FTTH devices and components, indoor fiber and cable
  • FTTH deployment experiences and lessons
  • FTTH operation and maintenance
  • FTTH challenges and promotion strategies

Dr. Wang joined Fiberhome Technologies Group in April 2003. He leads a team responsible for the group's technology directions and high-level product planning. From 1999 to 2003, he worked with SS8 as a senior architect and signaling product development director, where he led an R&D team doing VoIP and QoS research and development. In 1996, he joined Nortel Networks in Canada, where he was senior engineer, architect, and team leader in R&D of ATM, IP over ATM, MPLS, and IP over DWDM.

Mr. Zhang has worked for the Research institute of Telecom and Transmission, Ministry of Information Industry from 1995-2002, where he was responsible for drafting China national communication standards. His main focus is on automatic switching, optical networking, and broadband access technology.
Hiromichi Shinohara
Director, Access Networks Service System Laboratories

Mr. Shinohara conducts access network R&D at NTT, which covers FTTH systems, optical fiber cables, cable installation technologies, wireless systems, satellite systems, and civil engineering technologies. Since joining NTT in 1978, he has spent his carrier trying to realize FTTH. He has been engaged in the research and development of fiber-optic cables for access networks, broadband network architectures, optical access systems, and OAM systems for FTTH. Mr. Shinohara has been also engaged in the strategic planning of broadband access networks.
Deqiang Zhong
Senior Manager, Network Management Centre
China Netcom Beijing Branch
Mr. Zhong has been working in fixed-line telecom carrier for more than 25 years at Beijing Netcom. Early in his career there, he managed PCB diagnosis and repair on the stored programmed control telephone switch equipment maintenance area. Since 2000 he has been involved in the technical work over the Internet and broadband access networks projects at Beijing Telecom. Mr. Zhong managed the project of a centralized automatic test and diagnostic system for ADSL service at Beijing Netcom.
Peng Gao
Technical Director, Domestic Marketing Department

Mr. Gao graduated from the Beijing University of Posts and Telecomm in 1999, then worked as a salesman at the Shenyang Branch of WRI for one year. In 2000, he began to devote himself to his marketing career. Now Mr. Gao leads a team that is responsible for solution plans and broadband product promotions.
Bongtae Kim
Department Head, Optical Communications Research Center (OCR)

Since joining ETRI in 1983, Mr. Kim has been involved in various network systems and high-speed access network technology development projects. In March 2005, he assumed his current responsibility. Mr. Kim organized the Korea FTTH Industry Association in 2005 and worked as the organizing committee chair of the Conference on Optical Internet international conference held in July 2006. He is the organizing committee chair of Korea Optical Internet Forum. Mr. Kim's research interests are optical access network technologies, broadband network systems, and convergence services.
Greg Caltabiano
Teknovus
Mr. Caltabiano joined Teknovus from his role as president and chief operating officer of SOMA Networks, where he was responsible for corporate strategy, creation, and execution of all business and technical functions, spanning sales, marketing, engineering, and manufacturing. Mr. Caltabiano was instrumental in securing multimillion-dollar carrier contracts worldwide. Prior to SOMA, he was division vice president and general manager for Comverse Asia, building and managing Comverse's 15 sales and support offices and four R&D centers.
