The Transition from Fixed and Mobile WIMAX

WiMAX brings together diverse technologies such as cellular, broadband wireless, Wi-Fi, and wireline, offering solutions to fill gaps and virtually reach all spaces and environments with high-speed data transfers, multimedia environments, and rich content experiences that consumers demand. This presentation will explore WiMAX's advantages in the mix of broadband access technologies as well as how the WiMAX revolution is leading to successful field deployments and a growing footprint around the world.

It will also address how mobile WiMAX capabilities such as the 802.16e WiMAX variant, which will support mobility in future, has grabbed most of the attention from large vendors and carriers. Attendees will also learn current lessons learned from Alvarion WiMAX field deployments and trial results, how WiMAX helps to offer cost-effective true seamless mobility across various technologies with a light infrastructure, how WiMAX fits into the broadband access mix, and how that mix is likely to continue changing in the future.

Dr. Shakouri, who is a board member and vice president of marketing at the WiMAX Forum, has more than 20 years of experience in wireless systems, microwave, and fiber-optic networks. He spent three years at Lucent and 14 years in technical and management positions with Hewlett Packard, co-founded the wireless systems division, and is a WCAi Board member and IEEE MTT-SVC chairperson. He has a doctorate in electrical engineering from Stanford University.

Dr. Song is responsible for new business development and marketing for the mobile, broadband, and home network systems. Prior to joining Samsung, he worked for US WEST for more than five years in the new technology infrastructure, systems engineering, and software development areas. Dr. Song also worked for Bellcore and AT&T Bell Laboratories. He holds a doctorate in computer science, a Master of Science, and a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering.
